![]() What I loathe, though, is how PIA is relegated to the system tray with no option that I could find to treat it as a separate app window. PIA has a logical layout for its user interface, and it’s easy to use. For context, PIA has added 7,000 more servers since my initial review in 2021, which also happens to be the number of servers offered by the next largest VPN server count, CyberGhost VPN. While automatic server selection makes it more user-friendly for VPN newcomers, it is a missed opportunity to take advantage of the 35,000-strong server network. It’d also be great if PIA added the option to manually select servers or a server-switch button like PureVPN. The only recurring connectivity downside was the frequency of Google reCAPTCHA requests, which was a consistent annoyance across servers in Australia, the UK and the USA. Outside of that, PIA didn’t interfere with any of my internet-dependent software, including instant messaging, digital platforms, emails, torrenting software, network-attached storage (NAS), and anything else I threw at it. Admittedly, I did experience some interruptions to music streaming while switching between international servers, which suggests the one-to-two seconds of connection/disconnection time aren’t always what they seem to be. Most of my PIA testing was done on a Windows 11 PC, and it’s a speedy VPN when it comes to connecting and disconnecting. What starts with an assigned username and password-which helps keep an email address protected in the event of a credentials leak-extends to RAM-only servers and military-grade encryption. PIA has a slightly more competitive offer here, too, at $5 USD ($6.91 CAD) per month or $25.50 USD ($35.25 CAD) per six months, compared with $5.29 USD ($7.31 CAD) per month or $79.35 USD ($109.72 CAD) per year.Private Internet Access hits the ground running in terms of user anonymity. ![]() You can check whether NordVPN server locations will match yours on the company’s website.īoth VPNs offer the option of a dedicated IP for an additional fee, which grants you the ability to access IP-restricted networks while still maintaining your anonymity. Rather than compare the number though, it could be beneficial to check which ones have server locations in countries you plan to connect your VPN to. The number of server locations is a closer comparison, with Private Internet Access at 78 compared to NordVPN’s 60 server locations. NordVPN still has a high number of servers relative to other VPNs at 5,500, but Private Internet Access is a clear winner here. Private Internet Access also has a substantially higher number of servers and by far the highest of all the VPNs we’ve tested. One of the main differences is that PIA allows you to connect to a total of ten devices while NordVPN has a limit of six. As far as similarities, both companies offer 24/7 customer service, both have the same encryption (AES with 256-bit keys) and both are compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, Mac and Linux, while NordVPN is also compatible with Android TV. When it comes to price, Private Internet Access is considerably cheaper than NordVPN, at $56.94 USD ($78.78 CAD) per year, compared with $67.35 USD ($93.12 CAD) per year. $56.94 USD ($78.78 CAD) for the first two years and three monthsĪndroid, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux, Android TV Private Internet Access (2023 comparison) While we work hard to provide accurate and up to date information that we think you will find relevant, Forbes Advisor does not and cannot guarantee that any information provided is complete and makes no representations or warranties in connection thereto, nor to the accuracy or applicability thereof.
